Broken Chapter 9

The disappearance of Bryan’s sister had become a local sensation. Mostly because his mother had also disappeared thus making it perfect material for media speculation. There were all sorts of stories going around about how she had maybe eaten her or was keeping her alive in the woods somewhere to torture. Cut her into bits and scattered her remains across town. Without any signs of finding her all anyone could do was speculate. The disappointing part was that nothing was out of the realm for her.

Sandjai was stacking shelves. He quit fast food because customers kept badgering him about his parents. He had to avoid the lunchroom cause he got into a fistfight with a coworker talking about the situation. Blaming Bryan’s mom for his gayness and all sorts of shit, so he had to shut them up. At the time a fist to the face made perfectly good sense. Lucky for him he was young, and the manager didn’t fire him. Summer only had a few more weeks, so there wasn’t a need to fire him anyway.

His phone buzzed and he was so busy he didn’t bother to look at the number. But after he heard who was on the other line he bolted out of the store.

He was the last one on the scene, but there were tractors by the lake. He got out of his car and walked over to Jess and Lucas.

“So what happened?”

“Someone called in with a tip. Said they’d seen someone matching the description in this area. And a couple of out of town campers just happened to see us the news and call in.” Lucas said.

“How’s the family doing?”

“They’re doing. The only one who seems to care at all is their father. Honestly, if their sister wasn’t possibly in there I doubt they would’ve shown up.” Jess said.

The police were doing a good job keeping the paparazzi at bay. This was by far the strangest thing to ever happen to the town. Kidnapped child. Last seen in this area. Tire marks leading to the dock. It felt surreal.

As time moved on there finally seemed to be some action in the water. A car was slowly inching its way to the surface. As it was slowly dragged up onto the sand that lined the lake, it was odd to watch. Bryan and his family didn’t move, didn’t panic. There were no hysterics, no tears. They just stood there like statues. Completely devoid of emotion.

It seemed to go on forever. Nothing but the sound of the car slowly being dragged against the sand. Even with the Detectives giving orders and the paparazzi snapping pictures, everything was somehow eerily still. It was unnerving.

“They aren’t even crying. There’s a car with at least one body in it clearly being dragged out of the lake, and it’s almost like they aren’t even here.”

“I know Jess. How could they be so calm,” Lucas said.

“They’ve had a few days now to really think about just what she meant to them. Maybe they decided she isn’t worth it.” Sandjai said.

“Evil as she was, that’s still cold. If anything they should be angry.” Jess still couldn’t wrap her head around it. She was devastated enough, and they weren’t even her family.

“They’ve been angry for years Jess. Long before I came to the country and right up to the day she ran off with their sister. They don’t have anything left I guess.”

“I hope I never make it to the point in life where I just run out of any emotion for someone. Good or bad. I can’t imagine just having nothing for someone. Even their dad and he loved her. But look at him.” Jess said, and the three of them looked on. The only time they even caught a glimpse of emotion out of the family was when they confirmed the body of their sister. Grey clouds, a muddy car, and people just staring in awe at senseless but probably avoidable crime. Jess looked over to Bryan’s dad and thought to herself what they say is true. You definitely do some crazy things for love.
